Your Child’s First Phone: What Parents Should Know
Most families don’t need to jump straight from “no phone” to a full traditional phone plan. This guide walks through the decisions in between: whether your child is ready, what a data-only connection can and can’t do, and how to set one up safely, whichever option you choose.
When a child may be ready for a first connected device
There’s no universal age. The more useful question is what your child actually needs to do: get picked up on time, message you after school, or use maps and location sharing when they’re out of the house without you. If the need is mostly “stay reachable and reachable-by,” a limited, parent-controlled connection is often enough. If your child needs a phone number they can give to coaches, friends, or school independent of any particular app, that points toward a full phone plan instead. Hand-me-down phone vs. buying a new one
A phone already sitting in a drawer is usually the cheapest and most sustainable starting point, as long as it’s in good enough shape to hand down and supports a modern eSIM. Parental controls
Two layers matter here, and they’re not the same thing. Emergency communication limitations
This is the most important tradeoff to understand before choosing a data-only plan. A data-only device depends on an active internet connection and an app to reach someone; it doesn’t have its own cellular voice line to fall back on if data is unavailable. Device compatibility
