Can My Child Text on Android Without a Phone Number?

Android texting is different from iPhone messaging. A data-only Android phone can use internet messaging apps, but Google Messages and RCS usually expect a real phone number on the SIM.

That means a data-only eSIM is not a direct replacement for normal Android texting.

The short answer

Your child can message on Android without a cellular phone number, but usually not through normal SMS/RCS texting.

Better options include:

  • Messenger Kids for younger children.
  • Google Chat with a Google Account.
  • Discord for older kids.
  • Google Voice if you want an app-based phone number.
  • WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram only if you can provide a phone number for account setup.

Why Google Messages is tricky

Google Messages is built around SMS/MMS and RCS. Those features are tied to a phone number. A data-only eSIM gives the device internet access but does not give it a normal phone number.

Some features may appear to work in limited situations, but parents should not rely on Google Messages as the main communication tool for a data-only Android phone.

Best option for younger kids

Messenger Kids is often the cleanest choice for younger children because the parent manages contacts and the child does not need their own phone number.

The tradeoff is that it depends on Meta's ecosystem and is not the right fit for every family.

Best option for Google families

Google Chat can work with the Google Account you create for your child. This can be a good fit if your family already uses Google accounts and Android devices.

Best option if your child needs a real number

Google Voice can provide a phone number that works over data. Calls and texts happen inside the Google Voice app, not through the cellular plan itself.

Important: setting up Google Voice usually requires verifying with an existing phone number first. Many parents use their own number for that one-time verification step.

Apps that still need a phone number

WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram all require a phone number to create an account. Once set up, they can work over data, but they are not truly phone-number-free.

What to test before handing over the phone

Before your child relies on the device:

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi.
  2. Send a message to the parent.
  3. Receive a reply.
  4. Try a video or voice call in the chosen app.
  5. Confirm location sharing still works.
