What to Do If eSIM Installation Fails
If eSIM installation fails, do not keep retrying the same QR code over and over. First check the basics: compatibility, unlock status, EID, software, and internet connection.
1. Confirm the device supports eSIM
Check the exact model on the supported devices list. Similar names can hide important differences. Some regional or carrier-specific variants do not support user-installable eSIM even when the global model does.
2. Confirm the phone is unlocked
A carrier-locked phone may reject a new eSIM. If the phone came from a carrier or was financed through one, check unlock status first.
See How to Check If Your Old Phone Is Unlocked.
3. Look for an EID
The EID identifies the phone's eSIM hardware. If you cannot find an EID, the phone may not support downloadable eSIM.
On iPhone, look under Settings → General → About. On Android, look near SIM status, device information, or mobile network settings.
4. Update the phone
Install the latest available iOS or Android update. eSIM setup can fail on outdated software.
5. Use strong Wi-Fi during installation
Most eSIM installs need a stable internet connection while the profile downloads. Use reliable Wi-Fi and avoid starting installation while moving between networks.
6. Check whether the QR code was already used
Many eSIM QR codes or install links are single-use. If installation started and failed halfway through, the code may need to be reissued.
7. Restart the phone
Restart the phone, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and check whether the eSIM profile is already installed but inactive.
8. Check the right settings path
The setting name varies:
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data → Add eSIM.
- Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
- Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM.
- Windows cellular laptops: Cellular settings → eSIM profiles.
9. Do not erase network settings unless needed
Resetting network settings can help in some cases, but it can also remove saved Wi-Fi networks and other cellular settings. Treat it as a later troubleshooting step, not the first thing to try.
10. Ask support for a reissue
If the device is compatible, unlocked, updated, and still cannot install the eSIM, you may need a fresh install code or manual support.
When asking for help, include:
- Device model.
- Whether it has an EID.
- Whether it is unlocked.
- The exact error message.
- Whether the QR code was already scanned.
